How Does Gambling Affect the Individual?
What exactly is gambling? Gambling is the activity of betting, whether for money or for other things, on something with an uncertain result with the main purpose of winning something. Gambling therefore requires three elements for it to be valid: risk, consideration, and a reward. The risk that is involved in gambling can be in the form of various odds (e.g. two-point against one-point) or different odds (e.g. four points against one hundred).
Besides the uncertainty of gambling, another aspect of it that is both risky and potentially dangerous is the fact that gambling can addictions. Gambling addictions include things like gambling on payoffs (whether win or loss), on gambling sites, on betting trends, on betting strategies, or simply continuing to play after losses have occurred. As with any addiction, gambling addictions can be difficult to treat. Addictions that are treated properly and successfully can go a long way towards preventing serious addictions from occurring.
The third element that makes gambling may dangerous and should be controlled is a reward system. Although most forms of gambling have some sort of monetary reward involved, a lotteries tend to involve intangible rewards, such as recognition, admiration, gratitude, or a sense of achievement. These types of rewards can make a person continue to gamble despite the risks involved and can be difficult to motivate people away from casinos where these types of rewards are not readily available. This is a very important point and should be discussed when discussing ways to control gambling.
