Most patients never step inside the Hospital’s laboratory, yet they rely on this department to provide information that is vital for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. From routine blood work to highly complicated testing and analysis, our laboratory serves the region 24/7.

The Laboratory at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital is a full-service lab accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Certified technologists and technicians are on the job continuously, offering comprehensive testing and accurate results. And even though you may never see the lab or meet the technicians, they are aware that each specimen they test represents a valued person anxiously waiting for results. Our work is technical, but our focus is always on the patient and delivering information to a patient’s physician as quickly as possible.

Laboratory Services
Located on site, the laboratory is available all day, every day of the year for inpatient procedures and specimen submissions from the Emergency Department. In addition to blood bank services, we perform a full range of chemical, microbiological and hematological procedures. When a rare or highly specialized test is necessary, our affiliation with Mission Health System allows us to transfer specimens quickly and safely to the Mission Hospital Laboratory.

Outpatient Services
The lab is available for outpatient testing with an order from your physician. Patients are seen on a first come, first serve basis for outpatient services such as:

• Blood testing
• Throat, wound and urine culture
• Urinalysis
• Drug testing and breath alcohol collection for local industries

Preparing for Lab Tests
Some lab tests require advance preparation, such as fasting or limiting fluid intake. If you have any questions about your procedure, please call and we will give you instructions to follow.

Laboratory Team
Blue Ridge Regional Hospital’s laboratory is staffed by board certified pathologists, medical technologists and medical laboratory technicians experienced in conducting chemical, biological, hematological, microscopic and bacteriological tests.

Student Programs
Our laboratory works closely with many colleges in the area, helping students receive clinical experience and training.

Outpatient Procedures
You must have an order from your physician to obtain outpatient laboratory services. You may bring the order with you, or your physician may send the order directly to the Registration Department. The laboratory is open 24/7 to serve the needs of our patients. No matter what time you come for the test, please check-in at the Registration Department first.
