speech therapy

Being able to enjoy friends, socialize and function well in everyday life depends on communication. Speech and language problems may be embarrassing, frustrating and even threaten health if they interfere with swallowing. If you suffer from a speech problem, don't wait to seek help…it's available right here in your neighborhood.

Blue Ridge Regional Hospital employs speech-language pathologists, also known as speech therapists, to provide treatment for any type of speech and language disorder. Whether the disorder is present from birth, develops during childhood, or results from an injury or illness, highly trained and licensed speech therapists in our Rehabilitation Services Department are available to work with you to remediate communication problems.

For your convenience, speech therapy is available at two locations, at the hospital in Spruce Pine and at our Fitness and Rehabilitation Center in Burnsville. When necessary, we may also provide speech therapy in your home.

If you have any questions, need help with a referral or would like to schedule an appointment, call us at:

Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine – 828-765-7901
Blue Ridge Fitness and Rehabilitation in Burnsville – 828-682-6720

Our Patients
Speech disorders include stuttering, issues with pitch, volume or voice quality, problems articulating and difficulties eating and swallowing (dysphagia). Patients who are diagnosed with a language disorder either have a hard time understanding language or find it difficult to properly use words to communicate.

Speech and language disorders occur in anyone at any age and may be caused by medical conditions such as:

  • Weak oral muscles
  • Birth defects
  • Breathing and swallowing disorders
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Stroke
  • Oral cancer
  • Dementia
  • Developmental or cognitive delays

Our Services
Speech-language pathologists are trained and licensed to assess, identify and treat speech and language disorders. After a thorough assessment, they'll develop a personal treatment plan that includes one or more therapeutic intervention, such as:

  • Language intervention activities – interaction to stimulate language development
  • Articulation therapy – exercises to make proper sounds
  • Oral motor and feeding training – exercises and massage
  • Post-stroke language retraining

Our Team
The speech therapists at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital are all licensed, certified and bring excellent experience to the region.
